An Imperfect Moment with Momma | Franklin, TN | Family Lifestyle and Documentary Photographer

Most nights after dinner, my husband, kids and I do a walk/bike ride before bedtime. I always take my camera. I joke that I take my camera when I go to the mailbox, so I pretty much take it everywhere we go. You never know when beauty will strike (it’s everywhere!!), and it lets me play and capture our everyday at the same time. As the family photographer, I definitely do not get in front of the camera often enough. But every once in awhile, I adjust the settings and hand my camera off to my husband. I must say, he’s getting really good, especially shooting through moments. I have found that most often when someone offers to take a picture for me, they wait until everyone is looking at the camera. I too love an everybody-look-at-the-camera shot, but as you can see from these first couple of pictures, my son wasn’t real keen on taking a picture. I was, after all, disturbing his riding time. My husband and I were basically begging him, “Please come sit by Momma and take one picture, just one!” The begging stage…that’s when everything starts to get real ugly.

Did we keep harassing him, begging him to smile and look at the camera, give him an ultimatum? No. I gave him a little tickle as he pulled away and asked if we could do a silly one. My husband kept pressing that shutter. Pure gold. Look at my daughter’s face. Look at my my face. Look at my son. This is the real us!

When I look at the smiling-at the-camera picture, I remember how Bubbie didn’t really want to take a picture. But when I see the others, I don’t look at them and wish we were all looking and smiling at the camera. I remember how we laugh together, what it looks like to have my hands around my babies, what it feels like to hold them. This is how I want to remember us. How do you want to remember your family?
